As Meghan Markle continues to mourn the loss of her dog Guy, a particularly cherished memory of her beloved beagle has recently surfaced. It’s Prince Harry’s proposal. In fact, Guy played a pivotal role when the Duke of Sussex took a knee in 2017.
Describing the scene in his 2023 memoir Spare, Prince Harry recounted the sequence of events that led to their engagement. After drinking champagne in the kitchen of the couple’s Nottingham Cottage, Harry and Guy took Markle outside to a blanket surrounded by candles in the garden. Guy was immediately seated to oversee the proposal.
Prince Harry wrote: “Now I’m kneeling on the blanket, Guy by my side. We both look up at Meg searchingly.” He popped the question, and “we were crying and laughing and petting Guy who looked like he was frozen,” he continued.
After the proposal, Guy was also present in the glamorous room where Markle had her hair and makeup done on her wedding day. After the couple retired from senior royal duties in 2020, the couple moved to California.
“I loved that dog,” Harry wrote in Spare. “I couldn’t stop kissing and petting him. Yes, my intense feelings for Meg spilled over into people and things she loved. But I’ve wanted a dog for a long time. But I couldn’t keep one because I was very nomadic. ”
Markle returned to Instagram on January 1st after deactivating her account nearly seven years ago, and paid tribute to Guy. Markle has been using the app to promote her new Netflix cooking show, “With Love, Meghan,” which begins airing on January 15th. It was revealed that Guy will also be featured prominently on the show, along with celebrity guest Mindy Kaling.
“As many of you will see Guy in this new series, I hope you understand why I am so devastated by his loss,” she wrote on Instagram. ”
