Darlene Rodriguez: A Journey of Resilience, Storytelling, and Motherhood at NBC New York
Celebrating a remarkable 25-year tenure at NBC New York, Darlene Rodriguez has established herself as a prominent figure in television journalism. Early in her career, while expecting her first child, she faced skepticism about her ability to balance motherhood with a demanding job. A colleague bluntly advised her, “I hope you’re going to get a live-in nanny.”
Rodriguez, however, had other plans. Rejecting the notion that she needed a nanny, she emphasized, “First of all, my grandmother would kill me.” Her journey has led her to become a respected anchor, covering significant events in New York City’s history, such as the September 11 attacks, Hurricane Sandy, and the COVID-19 pandemic. Beyond her anchoring duties, she contributes to the Cristian Rivera Foundation, advocating against pediatric brain cancer.
“It was clear that a lot of people just thought I didn’t belong or that I just got this job because I’m a Latina and that there’s no way I’m really qualified like everybody else. That’s always been the case, and for me, that fuels me.”
Motivation and Unyielding Spirit
Rodriguez’s passion for journalism was ignited in her childhood, nurtured by a mother who was a dedicated news enthusiast. Growing up in the Bronx under challenging circumstances, she stated, “My mother was a single mom, super hard working. … Every evening, when she got home from work, she was cooking and we’d watch the news.” This experience shaped her understanding of the importance of storytelling.
She attributes her resilience and professional success to her challenging upbringing. “Being a woman, being Puerto Rican, being from the Bronx, growing up poor, those are things that a lot of people would consider strikes against you. I wasn’t raised like that. I actually felt like and still feel like that makes you strong,” she said. Rodriguez emphasizes that her background has equipped her with a “grit” that has propelled her forward in a competitive field.
“Nobody’s gonna remember that you took the day off to take your son on the school trip. You’ll remember if you don’t.”
The Privilege of Storytelling
Reflecting on her career highlights, Rodriguez cherishes the trust placed in her by the individuals whose stories she shares. “It’s the biggest privilege of my life that people trust me with their stories, and that they would let me in their homes,” she stated. This level of intimacy and confidence underscores her commitment to authentic journalism.
She recalls advice from a former news director: to approach each story as if it were about a neighbor, ensuring fairness and integrity. “As journalists, it’s all about us being authentic and telling the truth. And it’s not always going to be what people want to hear, and that’s okay.”
