Creating Neon Reflective Watercolor Nails: A Step-by-Step Guide
Celebrity manicurist and educator Julie Kandalec has introduced an exciting nail trend this spring: neon reflective watercolor nails. While the technique may appear complex, Kandalec provides clear guidance for achieving this stunning manicure at home or for your next visit to the salon.
Getting Started
Glitter nail polishes offer a unique advantage: they blend seamlessly with minimal effort. Kandalec recommends selecting two adjacent colors from the color wheel for natural-looking transitions. “It’s actually super duper easy because these colors are kind of jelly-like, so they layer over each other really easily,” she explains. Follow the steps below to create this eye-catching design.
Steps to Create Neon Reflective Watercolor Nails
Step 1: Nail Preparation
Begin by preparing your nails properly to ensure a long-lasting manicure. Follow a solid prepping routine, followed by applying your first color to two or three nails at a time. Apply polish from the base to the tip, covering one half of the nail (either the left or right side).
Step 2: Adding the Second Color
While the initial color is still wet, apply the second color next to it, brushing from the base to the tip so the entire nail is covered.
Step 3: Blending the Colors
Using an ombré brush, gently blend the two colors together with tapping or swiping motions. To maintain precision, Kandalec suggests wiping the brush on a paper towel between color applications.
Step 4: Layering Colors
While the polish remains wet, you can add more colors if desired. Beginners should start with two colors, while more experienced individuals may opt for four shades, as Kandalec did.
Step 5: Finishing Touches
Let the polish dry completely before sealing it with a top coat. If you are using gel polish, this is the stage to cure it under an LED lamp.
Step 6: Optional Enhancements
This step is optional but can add an extra touch of elegance to your manicure. Consider applying a chrome or mermaid powder between layers of a non-wipe top gel on a few nails. Julie, in her demonstration, applied chrome powder on the pinky and thumb, and suggests using tweezers to affix a few gemstones for added glamour.
With these steps, you’re well on your way to mastering the neon reflective watercolor nail art technique that is sure to turn heads this spring!
