Ted Lasso fans got the unexpected Richmond-Kensington Palace crossover they didn’t know they needed when Prince William and Hannah Waddingham stepped out together for a casual game of darts on Saturday. Ahead of the holidays, the Prince of Wales and Waddingham, who played Rebecca Welton in the hit Apple TV+ series, played a friendly match and a beer at Alexandra Palace to promote the royal family’s upcoming documentary Earthshot Report. We met over drinks.
The documentary, named after Prince William’s annual Earthshot Prize competition to source environmental solutions from around the world, premiered in the UK on December 15th and on PBS in the US on December 18th. I plan to Prince William will appear in a special introductory segment among the entries in this year’s conservation competition, before host Waddingham introduces some of the best entries.
Ahead of the documentary’s official release, Waddingham and Prince William appeared in a special promotional video released on December 14th, which shows them facing off in a classic bar game. The 10-minute video began with a short clip of the pair laughing while playing darts, before Waddingham introduced Alexandra Palace, the venue for the competition. Alexandra Palace is where the Arts Shot Awards will be held every year from 2021.
Waddingham then served a mystery guest, and as Prince William climbed out of the back seat of his black SUV, he quipped: “I was going to open the door.” As she shook hands with him, she deadpanned, “Welcome to my palace,” and gestured towards Alexandra Palace behind her.
He revealed that this palace was also the setting for the world darts tournament, and suggested, “Why don’t we go inside and watch it and play some pranks?” Over beers at an indoor bar, the pair walked up to a dartboard and the Emmy-winning actress said, “I definitely want to beat you at darts later,” before speaking briefly about her commitment to being the best in the environment. We talked. Promoting the “10 years of change” in film.
“I am equal parts delighted and terrified to play darts with you, the future King of England,” she admitted at the start of a friendly that ended with both players struck out.
Prince William talks about how he plays with his children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, joking that they need “cutaway” scenes to make it seem like they’re playing better than they actually are. He also revealed what he had talked about. About the message behind the Earthshot Award.
“I talk to my kids about it all the time,” he revealed. “It’s important for children to see, touch, feel and experience nature. If you’ve never used it, it’s very difficult to understand what it means to protect it.”
