OUTCRY: Alchemists of Rage is a compelling new documentary directed by Clare Major that delves into Whitney Bradshaw’s unique photography series. The documentary focuses on transforming women’s screams from expressions of silenced pain into a powerful act of collective resistance.

The Journey of the Documentary

This 30-minute film captures Bradshaw’s journey as she travels from her home in Chicago to various locations, including a reproductive freedom march in Washington, D.C., an OUTCRY exhibition in Denver, and a scream session in Dayton, Ohio. The Dayton event occurred just before the voting on Issue 1, which aimed to enshrine abortion rights in the Ohio Constitution.

Availability and Access

OUTCRY: Alchemists of Rage will be available for streaming from March 14 to April 12 as part of the AMC + “Future of Film: Athena Rising Stars” collection.

The OUTCRY Photography Series

Bradshaw’s OUTCRY project began during the 2018 Women’s March with just five portraits and has since expanded to over 500 images. This project underscores her commitment to compassionate facilitation and intersectional representation, as shown in the group scream sessions where she captures portraits of women.

Cultural Impact and Feminist Leadership

Major’s direction effectively sheds light on the OUTCRY series, emphasizing its rich cultural and psychological implications. By moving away from the hyper-sexualized portrayals often seen in traditional visual culture, Bradshaw’s project empowers women to direct their own narrative.

Through her innovative approach, Bradshaw enables women to express their pain and struggles through screaming, thereby transforming these involuntary reactions into intentional declarations of strength and defiance against systemic societal issues.

Conclusion

The OUTCRY project is not just a collection of photographs; it serves as a broader commentary on the normalizing of women’s victimization and an urgent call to action against the injustices faced by women today. The documentary, OUTCRY: Alchemists of Rage, encapsulates this transformative experience and invites viewers to engage with the powerful act of resistance through female solidarity.
