Global Center for Youth Futures and the Power of Youth Voices

Women's Reporter Contributor

A story of how the Global Center for Youth Futures builds agency, connection, and possibility for young people worldwide.

The turning point arrived in a quiet conversation that unfolded after a podcast recording. A guest paused before leaving the studio and said that something rare had happened. He felt that the room had allowed truth to breathe. That moment captured the spirit of the Global Center for Youth Futures in Atlanta. It captured a way of working that values unfiltered voices and that invites young people and community leaders to speak openly about the realities they face and the solutions they are building. The words stayed with Founder and CEO Dr. Anu Chakravarty. They crystallized everything she had set out to create. A place where clarity replaces charity talk and where dignity is treated as a blueprint rather than an aspiration.

The Global Center for Youth Futures was born from a simple but urgent observation. Nearly half the world is under thirty. In many low income countries nearly two thirds are under twenty five. Among people living with multidimensional poverty which includes limited access to services, safety, education, and stable housing half are under twenty five. These numbers reveal a global population of young people moving through uncertain futures. Their lives are shaped by precarious work, vulnerability to exploitation, mental health strain, and limited pathways to stability. Dr. Chakravarty saw the need for an organization that could fill the knowledge gap and advocate for their futures. She envisioned a place that could bridge research, practice, and lived experience while offering communities models that have already worked in similar environments.

The Global Center for Youth Futures began with a commitment to become a think and do tank. The organization would produce research, uncover working models, and amplify youth voices. It would also build programs, collaborate with community groups, and train those who support vulnerable youth. This combination sets the center apart because most nonprofits either analyze problems or work directly with communities. The Global Center for Youth Futures chose to do both. The result is a hybrid model that links people searching for solutions with those who have already tested and adapted those solutions in other settings.

The center leads with a clear mission. It finds models that work and shares these models with youth networks around the world. It mentors young people and offers certification programs. It builds opportunities for collaboration through its Hub which connects youth focused organizations from multiple regions. It creates original content through its Street Smart podcast and a growing portfolio of articles and interviews. These platforms allow the organization to show how youth act as agents of change. They solve problems in refugee camps, in urban settlements, and in underserved communities in ways that reveal resilience, creativity, and skill. This work reframes common narratives about poverty and risk. It demonstrates that young people are not defined by vulnerability. They are defined by possibility.

The center also works with intention to honor what Dr. Chakravarty calls ground truth. That truth comes from young people who know the conditions of their own lives and who know what might work in their communities. This commitment shapes every program and every partnership. It also influenced the creation of the upcoming GCYF Academy which will launch in 2026. The academy will offer professional development courses and workshops for people working with youth, especially in human rights and crisis response contexts. By building practical skills that can be applied immediately the academy supports practitioners who need strong and reliable methods for working with vulnerable populations.

A defining moment for the organization came during an interview with Dion Dawson, featured in episode five of the Street Smart podcast. He reflected on the experience by saying, “This conversation is not fluffy. It is not charity talk. It is the blueprint for dignity, data, and delivery at scale. Thank you to Dr. Anu Chakravarty and the Global Center for Youth Futures for creating a room where truth could breathe.” His words affirmed that the center’s approach creates a space where honest insight can be shared without hesitation. It reaffirmed that the center’s commitment to listening with respect carries real impact.

This foundation has shaped the Global Center for Youth Futures into a source of hope, connection, and actionable knowledge. The organization shows that solutions already exist. They can be adapted to local needs. They can be scaled with thoughtful support. Young people can lead these efforts when they are trusted, trained, and connected. The center’s work delivers a powerful message. Communities do not need to wait for outside interventions. They need access to the right ideas and the right support. With these in place they can build their own futures.
