Jordan Firstman: From Bachelor Pad to Musical Artist
Revamping Personal Space
During the COVID-19 pandemic, interior designer John Sharp undertook a dramatic renovation of Jordan Firstman’s Los Angeles home, turning it into a visually stunning and extravagant bachelor pad reminiscent of vintage gay cinema and 1980s cop thrillers. The standout feature was a unique faux-fur platform bed, which became a topic of conversation for its bold design.
However, as Firstman reflects, the bed’s allure faded as it became the site of many parties and red wine spills. “By the end of its tenure, it just looked horrible,” he noted during a recent Zoom interview. This once-vibrant space has since undergone a sophisticated transformation, embracing a more subdued aesthetic that mirrors Firstman’s personal evolution.
New Beginnings and Personal Growth
Now adorned with rich maroon walls and a plush purple velvet bed, Firstman’s redesigned home embodies his journey towards sobriety and maturity. Following tumultuous experiences, including a breakup, he describes the change as a natural outcome of his growth. “In the last year, I have grown up… I have no choice but to stay really focused if I’m going to deliver my best,” he explained.
Firstman, who has gained recognition in Hollywood through his work on projects like HBO Max’s Search Party and Netflix’s Big Mouth, continues to balance writing, acting, and a burgeoning music career. He recently appeared in Sebastián Silva’s film Rotting in the Sun, showcasing his commitment to diverse artistic expression.
Going Viral and Crafting Music
Firstman rose to prominence during the pandemic through amusing social media impressions, which drew the attention of high-profile celebrities. However, it was his “Secrets” series that solidified his viral presence, allowing fans to anonymously share their secrets for him to interpret creatively. This concept evolved into his debut comedy music album, Secrets, releasing on April 11, which features 16 tracks inspired directly by these fan submissions.
“Music has always been my favorite art form,” remarked Firstman, citing influences ranging from Adele to jazz icon Sarah Vaughan. The album boasts a variety of genres, melding rock, jazz, country, and pop—a reflection of his versatility and the eclectic nature of his influences.
Collaboration and Creative Process
The lead single, “I Wanna See My Friends Dicks,” characterized by its humorous lyrics and catchy sound, represents Firstman’s unique voice. Collaborators on the album include notable talents such as Rufus Wainwright and Julia Fox, who praised Firstman’s creativity and ability to turn his fans’ secrets into art. “It’s cool that he took inspiration from his fans’ deepest, darkest secrets,” Fox commented.
Firstman’s musical compositions balance satire with genuine artistry, often acknowledging the absurdities of life while delivering poignant messages. “The more seriously I take the whole thing, the funnier it is,” he stated, emphasizing the duality of his work.
Future Aspirations
Looking ahead, Firstman is developing a feature film and has been cast in a forthcoming HBO series alongside emerging talents, illuminating his multifaceted career trajectory. As he navigates Hollywood’s social landscape, Firstman notes a shift in his desires, stating, “I do feel like I have to be out less, which is good for me,” highlighting his focus on personal and professional growth.
Despite the challenges of the industry, Firstman maintains high aspirations for his album, even expressing hopes for a Grammy nomination. “Doing things that feel very random that I made happen with sheer force,” he said, capturing his ambitious spirit.
